This is a very good question and +1 rep point for you Ace! And I'm sure everybody has favorites.
I personally think WinRAR is better. It may be due to the fact that I
grew up using WinZip and the frikkin yellow windows made me so sick, so
goddamn sick that I almost threw up,... metaphorically of course.
Then came WinRAR. I don't remember where I got it from but I got it. It
was pre-cracked or something so I thought it was freeware(*sigh* n00b years). I
could get .zip and even .iso files too with WinRAR and it was super user-friendly.
Then I realized that WinRAR is just as much as a dick WinZip is.

I tried 7zip .It's not bad. Not bad at all, really. It's even free. It's a must
have and please do get it from filehippo or someplace else. It's very
TINY too. Under 1MB.

WinRAR is all over the place now.
Even ISO files are becoming .rar these days. I've never come across a game iso that was in a .zip file.

Everyone uses zip compression occasionally... but thats why WinRAR rocks.... it can play with zip files too....

The WinZIP +9 versions are able to play with WinRAR too. But I found WinRAR much more user-friendly! WAY MORE! Correct me if I'm wrong, but all Vistas are having trial version of WinRAR instead of WinZIP now, right?

Even though mangas and graphic novles come mostly in '.CBR' (which is in essence a .RAR file) ever noticed the less popular but not quite dead '.CBZ' files? Those are actually WinZIP files.

CBZ are damn rare. Almost never had any. Except maybe the V for Vendetta one I had. I deleted it by mistake thinking I had made a backup.
