Princess mononoke isn't the usual surreal dreamlike "bed time story" stuff that we associate Miyazaki with. It's more sort of an epic, filled with action, adventure and a little amount of gore (surprising yet true).Plus the recurrent environmental themes found in more or less all Miyazaki flicks. Nonetheless, great movie, great plot, great visuals and a fascinating set of characters. Another must watch (I know it's getting boring, but it can't be helped!).....

Nausicaa was not gory.... but certainly not bedtime story material either.... but this (Mononoke) is by far the most explicitly violent of the Miyazaki films.... or at least the only film where the violence is the 'in-your-face' type with blood and guts.... and not the usual 'implied' type.... where things blow up and people die but it happens either off screen... or you dont actually see it happening.... you see those 'fire demons' dancing (ala Future Boy Conan etc)...
