yeah, the title screams THEY ALL SUCK. but if you say it, you have surely not watched MTV's new reality show ROCK ON. now, don't jump to conclusions by just reading the name that 'plagiarized corny sounding title. lame' . i did and i missed out many previous episodes. i regret it now.
i caught only one episode 2 days ago and believe me it was so good, i missed my FRIENDS re-runs. (hey, stop groaning! i hadn't watched those episodes, okay?) this show is just for the name sake a rock band hunt show. various artists from all over India participate in it- some singers, some beat-boxers, some drummers, flutist, tabla players, guitarists, classical music trained guys, in fact, in this episode one guy playing saxophone was featured too.
the judges- nikhil chinappa(everyone knows how hard he can kick ass. a real dude, he is) watches out from the presentation point of view. Kailash Kher, the best and most eligible to be a judge of all three, checks out the 'desi feel'(God knows what it means. rock music is a foreign culture after all!) and the third guy- i dunno his designation, but he sounds intelligent, so we can safely hypothesize he's there to concentrate on the nuances.
a medley of artists perform, sadly for a painfully short time, and they are judged on their individuality. then some are picked to jam, to do jugalbandi and judged again. the best part is when the judges illustrate how to perform or break into impromptu jig or sing, especially kailash kher. this guy is such a genius, he conjures up lyrics impulsively and starts singing on his own tunes. like in this episode, he sang BA BA BLACK SHEEP with dandiya music in the background!
you all HAVE to watch it. its the only standard hindi reality show on the scene.

Yes, very original. A genius!
I hated MTV long ago and the Roadies fad cemented it. I quit watchig MTV from when they stopped showing angreji music. I did like Fully-Falthu but it started sucking when the stupid astronauts madde satya-NASA of my respect for the channel(oh I did like that one joke where the smarter of the two astronauts says"this is for chewing and this is for doing").
Khailash Kher... never knew much about the guy but I did like some of his songs. Allah Ke Bande was really good.
But to include him in a Rock Band Hunt? It sounds pretty retarded to me (very IMHO and no offense Omkar).
I like genre busting, genre making and genre breaking and what not! But only if it sounds good. And this doesn't sound good.
But don't take my word either. I'm just a mad, ranting, zombie werewolf and I haven't seen the show yet.

Nope, you aren't the only one who says so. i admit, it IS hard to digest. especially since Kailash Kher fancies himself as a rockstar. take this:
Random contestant: I must confess- the ROCK BANDS I HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY column which i have filled in the audition form is totally incorrect. i might have written LP there but i have no idea what LP is! i dunno much about rock artsits either.
Kailash Kher: What are you talking about? Haven't you heard ME??
lame, isn't it?

but then, he is from a music industry and must have quite some knowledge about Rock. Besides, as they put it, he is in there to put some desi-ness to the Indian rock. fits, i would say, when they have shortlisted guys playing flute, saxophone, table, sitar, violin etc. in a rock band hunt.

URGENT DECLARATION: I DISTANCE MYSELF FROM MY OWN COMMENTS AND PRAISE I LOADED ON THIS SHOW!
The reason being this show is going the Roadies way. They want to capture some bitching in the name of spice, churn out bull in the name of jamming and experimentation, and air hullabaloo(heh, funny word!) in the name of music and rock concerts. The show has some talent but that is restricted to individual levels. Like the violin, flute players, the rapper and some drummers and guitarists. As a group, they SUCK. Big time. The recent episode had a group of artists coming together and remixing, recomposing existing B'wood songs into rock versions with some 'Deshi feel'(Kher's fav phrase. It has started sounding lame now). Thankfully, judges mince no words in scrapping them but sometimes I disagree with their views. Like I remember Dil Chahta Hai title song rendition which was presented with 'Yo people!' and 'C'mon everybody!' and 'Voo-hoo!'s injected after every few lines while gyrating weirdly to the questionable rhythm provided by keyboard and electric guitar players. The singer girl was hot but had no grace or even musical talent. Damn, all that spoilt it. And that's just one example
Another potentially excellent show disappoints. Wll the Indian television never grow up?

Why am I not surprised?

'Deshi' feel was lame ever since the first time he used that Phrase. made me think that Kurkure was paying him for everytime he said it.
